2013 Educator Workshops

Legacy is pleased to announce the 2013 Workshop Series. The series is designed to give educators the opportunity to experience the wonder of Alabama's diverse environment all the while equipping them with the knowledge and resources to take their experiences back into the classroom.

 

 

Preserving Alabama's Natural Treasures
April 26-27: Anniston Museum of Natural History

This drive-in workshop will take you behind the scenes at the Anniston Museum of Natural History and teach about the importance of building and maintaining natural history collections in your classroom.  Get hands-on experience in the practice of making, labeling, and storing paleontological and botanical collections.  Also, learn first-hand what it takes to care for and maintain animals in your classroom.

Nature’s Nurseries: Exploring Estuaries & The River Delta Bay  - WORKSHOP IS FULL
June 3-6: Beckwith Camp and Conference Center

Immerse yourself in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta as you explore the bays, coastal forests, estuaries, wetlands, and diverse wildlife that that make up this unique environment.  Activities will include visits to the 5 Rivers Delta Resource Center, Weeks Bay and the Environmental Studies Center, where participants can see a Legacy grant in use.  Educators will participate in boat tours, seine and tow for plankton, learn about pitcher plant bogs and other coastal plants, view coastal birds, and visit the portable STARLAB planetarium.

Riches of the River: Exploring the Sipsey
June 12-14: Alabama Museum of Natural History’s Expedition Field Camp
Watersheds, water quality, and the amazing plants and animals of the Sipsey River will be the focus as we discover what’s around the next bend.  This rustic experience will be complete with luxury tent accommodations and on-site gourmet campfire food.   Training in the Living Streams curriculum will be presented by Dr. Bill Deutsch of Alabama Water Watch.  All participants will also receive Project WET certification upon completion of the course.  This expedition combines exploration and science to create a unique experience.

Arts and the Environment: Making Connections

July 8-11: Cheaha State Park
Join us atop Alabama’s highest mountain to explore the natural wonder of Alabama's Cheaha State Park and JSU's Mountain Center near Heflin, by hiking to Lost Falls, paddling the tranquil Tallapoosa River, and experiencing hands-on art which includes activities such as pottery, blacksmithing, "found & natural art" techniques, watercolor, creative drama and more!

The South’s Richest Forest: Exploring the Longleaf Ecosystem
July 29-August 1: Solon Dixon Forestry Education Center

Learn about the importance of this disappearing ecosystem and its vital role as a host to the many plants and animals that inhabit it, such as the red cockaded woodpecker.  Also, learn about the on-going efforts to restore this once-thriving forest, participate in tracking the federally threatened Eastern Indigo snake, and explore the carnivorous plants of this region.  Enjoy an evening trip to a local pond with a frog expert to learn about the habitat and varying calls of these fascinating amphibians.

Down Under in North Alabama
September 12-15: Paint Rock Valley Lodge, Estill Fork

Join spelunking experts on an exciting adventure exploring caves and learn about the biodiversity of North Alabama's karst topography from one of Alabama’s leading geologists, Dr. Jim Lacefield. Find out how caves are formed and what creates the beautiful cave formations. During the cave explorations participants will see endangered aquatic cave life and bats. One exciting part of the workshop will be a visit to an Alabama State Park, Cathedral Caverns, where we will see the world's largest cave opening, the world's largest stalagmite and the world's largest frozen waterfall. We will also investigate a few of the wild caves in northeast Alabama. Through classroom and field studies, we will explore content knowledge, teaching techniques, and classroom activities to help students learn about the wonders of caves.

*All Legacy workshops require a $40.00 non-refundable application fee for Non-Partners ($15.00 of this deposit will give the applicant a one year membership in Legacy’s Partnership Program) or a $25.00 non-refundable application fee for all Legacy Partners.  The one exception is the “Learning through Legacy” workshop, which requires a $50.00 fee for Partners or a $65 fee for Non-Partners.
The Partnership Program allows environmentally aware individuals to assist us in providing balanced, fact-based environmental education programs and materials to citizens throughout our state. Remember your contribution to Legacy is tax deductible. As a Legacy Partner you will receive discounts on our annual partnership conference and the remaining Legacy workshops for that year.

•    Participants will receive a certificate of completion, professional development hours, and many FREE classroom materials.
•    Lodging, meals, and materials for the workshops are provided.  Legacy is not able to cover substitute teachers and travel expenses to and from the workshop location.  
•    Any K-12 educator currently teaching within the State of Alabama, any person about to or who has already graduated with an Education Degree, graduate students with an Education Degree or other environmental educators may apply to attend.

Legacy workshops include activities that will be strenuous (e.g. hiking up steep hills in warm weather and canoeing.) If you have any medical problems that would prevent you from strenuous activity, it is advised that you do not attend these workshops.
